In 2009, President Barack Obama joined millions of our fellow Americans in celebrating Diwali.

As he lit a diya in the Oval Office, he became the first President to observe the sacred Festival of Lights.

To commemorate the moment, he wrote,

"To all who are celebrating the festival of lights across America and around the world, Happy Diwali. As Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and Buddhists light the diya, share in prayers, decorate their homes, and open their doors to host and feast with loved ones, we recognize that this holiday rejoices in the triumph of good over evil and knowledge over ignorance.

Diwali... "speaks to a broader truth about our shared American experience. It's a reminder of what's possible when we see beyond the differences that too often divide us."

Diwali is a tradition of open doors, open minds, and open hearts. It's a celebration marked by exchanging gifts, sharing sweets, and the joyful laughter of loved ones.

This October, CADEM joins the millions of Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and Buddhists in California and around the world to celebrate Diwali!

Hosted by Deepa Sharma, Chair of CADEM's Asian Pacific Islander Caucus , we will mark this auspicious occasion with celebration and action!
