John, protecting democracy is, unambiguously, an ADL issue. It’s my issue; it’s your issue. If U.S. democracy is undermined, ADL cannot win in the fight against antisemitism. A robust democracy is essential for protecting Jews and others. And our democracy is under threat.

ADL teamed up with the McCain Institute last week to discuss “Protecting American Democracy: Working Together to Counter Hate and Extremism.” At the event, our CEO Jonathan Greenblatt gave a major address on the threats facing our democracy, the strategies needed to effectively respond and the role ADL is playing since we made the protection of democracy one of our top priorities this year.

Jonathan was joined by Congressman Jamie Raskin, a member of the January 6 Select Committee investigating the 2021 insurrection, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, who has courageously stood up for election integrity in the face of armed protesters and nonstop threats, scholar/activist Eric Ward and other leaders on this vital issue.

Along with Paul Fagan of the McCain Institute, I moderated the day’s conversation, diving deep into the mainstreaming of the once-fringe extremism that is corroding our democracy and escalating political violence. Jonathan noted that 40% of Republicans, 40% of Independents and 25% of Democrats now say that violence is justified to address their political grievances. Along with leaders from the White House and other civil society advocacy organizations, including faith groups, we discussed ways in which racism and antisemitism have become central to the polarization and hyper-partisanship we see, and offered strategies for combating them.

How Can You and ADL Protect Our Democracy?

ADL, as part of our Democracy Initiatives, is:

- tracking and disrupting the threat of extremist-led political violence in the lead-up to the 2022 elections against elected officials, candidates, poll workers and voters, focusing on six key states with heightened risk, where civil society election security coalitions exist and where we have other assets to bring to bear — Florida, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Arizona and Texas;
- providing alerts and resources to law enforcement;
- engaging directly with tech companies to hold their social media platforms accountable for hosting election misinformation;
- providing a new toolkit to municipalities that have been affected by extremist violence and wish to consider legal action along the lines that we are currently pursuing on behalf of the District of Columbia, where we are pro bono co-counsel in a case against the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys arising out of the January 6 insurrection.
A key part of this approach to protecting democracy that I haven’t mentioned yet is you!

You can play a vital role by speaking out to family, friends, neighbors and online communities — about the need for free and fair elections, the importance of voting, and

reporting any concerns if you spot problems with the voting process. ADL has created

Just a couple of days after the elections, I will be at

Never Is Now, ADL’s summit on antisemitism and hate, to discuss political violence and rampant misinformation during election season during our panel on “After the Midterms: Elections, Extremism and Disinformation.” Don’t miss our keynote speakers including Congresswoman Liz Cheney (R-WY), who will discuss the urgent need to safeguard our democratic institutions from extremism and FBI Director Christopher Wray, a national leader in the fight against violent extremism.

Join me there on November 10th!

Thank you for coming together as part of the ADL community to reject misinformation and extremism, to promote fair voting, and to protect our democratic institutions.
Sincerely,
