Dear AFGE member,

Since 2018, October 14 has been known as Augusta Y. Thomas Day — a day dedicated to community service and reflection of the life that inspires us all to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves.

Ms. Augusta’s long history of activism goes back to her childhood growing up in Jim Crow Era Kentucky. She was active in the Civil Rights Movement, participating in some of the most important actions of that time, including the 1960 Greensboro Sit-Ins and the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Workers’ Strike, amongst others.

As an AFGE leader, NVP Emeritus Thomas served in local and regional union leadership positions before being elected to serve as the National Vice President of Women and Fair Practices from 2009-2018. Ms. Augusta accomplished a great deal during her time here, but her legacy is perhaps most visible in AFGE Y.O.U.N.G. and AFGE Pride, two programs she developed to build a more inclusive union for all AFGE members.

On this 5th Annual Augusta Y. Thomas Day, we encourage AFGE members, activists, and leaders to not only remember Ms. Augusta, but to celebrate her and carry her spirit on by doing what you can to build a better workplace, union, and world.
