As abortion access shrinks in the South, tax dollars flow to fake clinics

A third of U.S. anti-abortion crisis pregnancy centers are in the South, a region where dozens of abortion clinics have closed since the Supreme Court overturned the constitutional right to an abortion in June. Over the past decade, Republican-controlled legislatures have given millions of tax dollars to these fake clinics that traffic in dangerous misinformation. (10/14/2022)

New South rising: LaTosha Brown on tilling the soil for political progress

For decades, the co-founder of the Black Voters Matter Fund has led voter organizing campaigns across the South and helped lay the groundwork for Democratic wins in Georgia's 2020 presidential and U.S. Senate elections. She talked with Facing South about mobilizing for the midterms, misconceptions about the South and the region's Black voters, and building a genuine multiracial democracy.

Institute seeking Finance and Administration Manager

The Institute for Southern Studies, an award-winning nonprofit research and media center based in Durham, North Carolina, and publisher of Facing South, is seeking a full-time Finance and Administration Manager.

This position is an exciting opportunity for a mid-level professional to take leadership and build skills on a range of financial, administrative, human resources, and operational functions for a small Southern social justice organization with deep roots and a powerful reach across the South.

The position is full time (40 hours per week) and will be based at the Institute's office located in Durham, North Carolina. Annual starting salary is $75,000 and the position includes medical, dental, and vision insurance with 100% employee premium coverage, a competitive leave policy, and a $1,500 annual professional development budget.

Protecting the migrant workers who rebuild after climate disaster

Republican governors have been playing politics with migrants' lives even while their states rely on their labor to rebuild after storms. The migrants are part of a hidden and uniquely vulnerable workforce that travels from disaster to disaster — and that is now being organized by an initiative conceived in the wake of Hurricane Katrina called Resilience Force.
