Hi Folks,

As the Mayor of Indianapolis, public safety is my top priority.

The residents of Indianapolis deserve to feel safe in their neighborhood and throughout our community. That's why I'm working to implement bold and evidence-based programs that will help reduce crime and keep Indianapolis safe. Driving that effort is our 3-year, $150 million violence reduction plan made possible through federal American Rescue Plan dollars. Our strategy includes things like:

The Gunshot Detection Pilot Program -- Alongside the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and the Indianapolis City-County Council, I recently announced the next phase of our Gunshot Detection Pilot Program. Ongoing IMPD technology investments like license plate readers and mobile camera trailers are already showing positive results by helping deter bad actors, clear cases, and holding those who commit violent crimes accountable.

The Elevation Grant Program -- Last week, in partnership with the Indianapolis Foundation, I announced the second round of funding awarded by the Elevation Grant Program, previously known as the Violent Crime Reduction Grant Program. This second round is the latest of our 3-year, $45 million total investment to organizations that offer evidence-based violence reduction programs that work to empower residents and help communities thrive.

A record budget for public safety -- In my 2023 city budget proposal, I earmarked a record amount for public safety to increase pay for first-year Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers, continue our anti-violence campaigns, and support various community initiatives. This budget will also fund a 24-hour emergency response team that will dispatch behavioral health workers who are better equipped to respond to non-violent mental health crises and substance abuse episodes.

As your Mayor, I'm working to ensure Indianapolis is safer, healthier and more prosperous. And though we've experienced over a 15% decrease in gun violence compared to last year, I’m confident that each of these initiatives will only accelerate our progress.

Thank you,

Mayor Joe Hogsett
