** Gwynne responds to sacking of Kwasi Kwarteng
------------------------------------------------------------

Responding to Liz Truss sacking her Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng, Andrew Gwynne said:

“Today Liz Truss has sacked her Chancellor for implementing her own policies. She has done this in a shameless attempt to save her own skin after her disastrous mini budget crashed the economy and sent mortgage rates soaring. Her decision means that Jeremy Hunt becomes the 4th Tory Chancellor this year alone. This isn’t a stable or sustainable government.

“Liz Truss developed the mini-budget with her Chancellor. She signed off on every last detail – including the 45p tax cut for the super-rich – which she then had to backtrack on. She now thinks that by changing Chancellor she can dodge accountability for her own actions. She is taking the British public for fools.

“The truth is the damage has been done. It is too little, too late. Working people will be paying the price of this crisis made in Downing Street for years to come.

“The Tories have gambled with our economy and gambled with lives and livelihoods. They’ve done so against the advice of economists from across the political spectrum, and without a proper forecast from the Office for Budget Responsibilities.

“The Conservative Party has proven that they are totally ill-equipped to deal with the cost-of-living crisis. Only Labour offers the leadership, ideas and ambition to repair our economy and build a fairer, more prosperous Britain.”

** Gwynne urges action during Breast Cancer Awareness Month
------------------------------------------------------------

Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, has marked Breast Cancer Awareness Month by urging the Government to do more to tackle Breast Cancer waiting times.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month runs throughout October, and aims to help people better understand the signs and symptoms of the most common cancer in the UK. The Charity ‘Breast Cancer Now’ estimates that more than a third of woman don’t regularly check their breasts, and have prepared an infographic which can be accessed here ([link removed]) .

As well as marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Gwynne has urged the Government to do more to tackle delayed diagnosis rates in breast cancer. In January, analysis revealed that half of suspected breast cancer patients were waiting more than two weeks to see a specialist after being urgently referred.

Commenting, Andrew Gwynne said:

“I’m really proud to be supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month. As the most common cancer in the UK, Breast Cancer has robbed too many families of lives and loved ones.

“We need to do everything we can to make sure that everyone knows the signs and symptoms to look out for, and I’d encourage local people to share the brilliant resources collated by Breast Cancer Now.

“But it’s also important that when people are seen, they are seen and diagnosed quickly. Something the Government needs to get a grip on urgently. We must provide the NHS with the workforce expansion it so desperately needs, and ensure that patients can access care as and when they need it.”

** Gwynne slams 'Tory incompetence as mortgage prices soar
------------------------------------------------------------

Andrew Gwynne, MP for Denton and Reddish, has condemned the Government after Labour analysis revealed that families in the North West could be handed mortgage hikes of £374 a month as a result of what Gwynne has called ‘Tory economic incompetence’.

Bank of England data shows that homeowners coming off two-year fixed terms are set to be hammered by rising prices following the Conservative ‘mini-budget’, which attempted to hand unfunded tax cuts to the risk and tanked the value of the pound.

Despite the Government being forced into a climbdown on its plans to scrap the 45p top rate of tax, mortgage rates are still likely to top five or even six per cent. That would leave homeowners in the North West facing monthly increases of between £282 and £374 a month. The average increase across the United Kingdom would be almost £400 a month.

The increase in repayments will offset action on energy bills for many households. The government’s refusal to back Labour’s plans for a windfall tax on oil and gas providers meant that taxpayers were already on the hook for higher additional borrowing than they would have been under a Labour government.

Commenting, Andrew Gwynne said:

“This analysis is staggering. The Tories tried to give the super rich tax cuts, tanked the economy and now families across the North West are facing higher mortgage payments during a cost of living crisis. Local people deserve so much better.

“The Tory Party cannot be trusted to deliver for homeowners. That’s why Labour have stepped-up and committed to a comprehensive plan to target a homeownership rate of 70% and create 1.5 million new homeowners.

“People across Denton and Reddish are having to fight their way through an economic storm, all because of Tory economic incompetence.”

Keir Starmer MP, leader of the Labour Party said:

“These eye-watering mortgage increases will cause homeowners across the North West sleepless nights – and the Tory Government is entirely to blame.

“Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng crashed the economy with their attempts to hand enormous, unfunded tax cuts to those who least need it. The humiliating U-turn they were forced into came too late – the damage had been done. Now people across the North West are suffering the consequences. This was a crisis made in Downing Street but paid by working people.

“The Prime Minister must reverse her kamikaze budget, including her totally unfunded £17 billion corporation tax giveaway to the biggest companies. The burden of the Tories’ fantasy economics should not fall on working people.”

** A celebration of reading at Denton West End Community Library 📚
------------------------------------------------------------

I had a fantastic Saturday morning over at Denton West End Community Library ([link removed]) with Councillor Mike Smith ([link removed]) and Councillor George Jones ([link removed]) to celebrate the end of the Summer Reading Challenge
([link removed]) .

As well as cakes, craft activities and story time, we got to present the certificates to all the children who’d completed the challenge (and there were a lot of certificates to hand out, which is fantastic!!).

Well done to all!

P.S. Lyle had a great time too!

** A colossal clear-out with Friends of the Tame Valley 💚
------------------------------------------------------------

I had a great time at the Sunday morning Friends of the Tame Valley clean-up of the Upper Haughton and Whittles Meadows.

We cleared shopping trolleys, a composter, two tires and bags of rubbish from the river bank and the stream.

Thanks to Steve for organising and to Chris, Lotty, Graham, John, Andrew, Allison and Lyle for all helping!

📰 READ: In the latest edition of the Stockport Express, I've written about the effect that the mini-budget and financial instability is having on the people of Stockport.

By announcing a series of unfunded tax cuts for the super-rich and torching the economy in the process, Truss’ actions directly led to mortgage lenders pulling offers or increasing interest rates.

Working people will be footing the bill for this kamikaze budget for years to come – at the exact moment that they’re struggling the most.

📰 READ: Thank you to the Tameside Reporter ([link removed]) for covering the outcome of my meeting with GMP Tameside ([link removed]) ’s Chief Superintendent on Friday, concerning the illegal riding of motorbikes across the constituency. 🏍

I’m also having similar discussions with GMP Stockport ([link removed]) too as the problem crosses the border into the Reddish part of my constituency too.

It’s important that the police can act on good intelligence to nip the problem in the bud at source.

A reminder that the police are encouraging residents to give intelligence to Crimestoppers UK, by calling 0800 555 111 in confidence.
