Honoring Indigenous Peoples' Day - Commissioner Olson visits UMD, connects with native students

As part of his statewide tour, Minnesota Office of Higher Education (OHE) Commissioner Dennis Olson made a special visit to the University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD) on Indigenous Peoples' Day, Oct. 10. The visit allowed Olson to meet with native students?and hear their personal stories on how OHE's financial aid programs are serving them and have conversations on important topics and issues that they face.



?It was incredibly important for me to hear that our financial aid programs are working and serving the students that they are intended," said Olson, who referenced two students who are benefitting from the new Fostering Independence grant program [ [link removed] ] and the Minnesota Indian Teacher training program [ [link removed] ].

Commissioner Olson's statewide tour continues at Riverland Community College, Intek Plastics

Commissioner Olson continued his statewide tour by visiting?Riverland Community College to meet with the institution's?leadership and students. Riverland is member of the Minnesota State system. With three locations in the?Austin, Albert Lea, and Owatonna, Riverland has been an incredible?asset in providing strong career and technical education programs to greater southeast Minnesota.

In celebration of Manufacturing Month, Commissioner Olson also visited Intek Plastics, a supplier of custom plastic solutions in Hastings, Minn. on Oct. 7 along with Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) Temporary Commissioner Nicole Blissenbach.

The visit allowed the commissioners to meet the beneficiaries of the Minnesota Dual Training Grant [ [link removed] ], a partnership program between OHE and DLI, as well as discuss current workforce challenges and successes.

This new online resource can also serve educators in guiding their students on their postsecondary path as early as possible. MyHigherEd?s College Search Tool [ [link removed] ] offers an easy way to explore Minnesota postsecondary institutions to choose the right college for them. As students consider their options, MyHigherEd can serve as a trusted resource to prepare them for college.
