Howdy John,
"Democracy, poisoned: America’s elections are being attacked at every level" — that was Tuesday's headline from The Guardian.
They're raising the same alarm we've been about election deniers pushing to install themselves into key roles that will allow them to overturn the results of our elections. Nate Silver's FiveThirtyEight estimates that 60% of Americans will have election deniers on the ballot in November.
Here's the good news: We at Run for Something have launched an $80 million election protection effort called Clerk Work — the biggest progressive-led effort to recruit pro-democracy candidates to election administration roles across the country.
With less than a month until Election Day, we can't waste any time.
We just launched a brand new website to coordinate our efforts to recruit, train, and support Democracy Defenders who will ensure that future elections are accessible, fair, and equitable. Check it out:
Amanda and I say this a lot: The biggest threats to democracy won't come from violent mobs storming the Capitol. They’ll be an election-denying clerk in Michigan refusing to certify results, or an election administrator in Arizona shutting down polling locations. It's the slow burn of politicians hacking away at voters' faith in the democratic process entirely.
Democracy is only as strong as the people tasked with administering it. That's why Run for Something is going all-in to elect candidates who will uphold free and fair elections and keep them safe for future generations.
John, this work is tough, and it's going to take a HUGE mobilization effort, much like we saw in 2020, to get it done. Right now, we're just not seeing the same surge of momentum and energy we did to defeat Trump, but this threat is just as urgent.
The far-right is building a movement to try and undermine our democracy. It's up to us to build an even bigger one to protect it. Step 1 is getting the word out — so please visit ClerkWork.net and share it widely!
Let's go,
