This week, InSight Crime looks at the conflicting narratives surrounding the life of Moises Humberto Rivera Luna, alias "Viejo Santos ([link removed]) ," an accused MS13 leader set to be extradited to the United States. The US and Guatemalan governments allege he is a dangerous MS13 leader who can call shots despite being behind bars. But he says he is just a retired gang member who wants to stay away from the politics of power.
We also take a look at a data leak ([link removed]) from Mexico’s Defense Ministry (Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional - SEDENA) by a hacker collective that has spilled plenty of well-kept state secrets, including the possible infiltration of Tabasco's state government and a plan to assassinate the country’s president.

During two separate side events on October 20 and 21, McDermott will discuss how criminal groups have taken advantage of migration in Latin America to expand their presence, and the alarming role that organized crime has played in furthering deforestation and environmental damage in the Amazon rainforest.

Ask US and Guatemalan authorities about Moises Humberto Rivera Luna, alias "Viejo Santos," and they will tell you the Salvadoran national is a top member of the Mara Salvatrucha (MS13) who is still calling shots from behind bars for one of the most feared criminal groups in the Americas; that he may even be ordering assassinations and organizing illicit schemes from Washington, DC to San Salvador.
But ask Rivera Luna, and the 53-year-old will tell you that he is “God-fearing” and “done” with gang life.
