From Somalia to Afghanistan, we’re vaccinating children to protect them against measles

Measles isn't just one of the most contagious infectious diseases in the world—it's also one of the deadliest, especially for children under the age of five. That’s why it’s so alarming that this year, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has seen an unprecedented spike in measles outbreaks—and we’re on the ground responding in countries around the world.
Getting vaccines to children who remain unprotected is the number one way to stop this dangerous disease.
Measles is dangerous enough on its own. But it's especially frightening when it's compounded by other threats to children's health, such as malnutrition.
With both measles and malnutrition on the rise this year, children’s lives are at risk.
In recent years, measles vaccination rates have fallen due to:
Conflict and damaged infrastructure in places like Afghanistan
Disruptions to routine child vaccinations due to COVID-19 in places like Liberia
And inequitable access to healthcare in places like the DRC.
MSF is on the ground in countries around the world to get vaccines to all who need them and close critical gaps in healthcare infrastructure.
