Let’s start with this fascinating Joel Kotkin piece in which he divides our economy between “the material economy and the economy based in ephemera.”  This piece is a must read, but I am using it as a springboard so I will not summarize as I think that differentiation is obvious.  Nonetheless, please take the time to read the piece.  I want to focus on this one idea from it:

The Place For Realpolitik

Realpolitik is often frowned upon because a purely pragmatic approach to politics can go into some pretty ugly places.  But there are times when it is wholly appropriate.  I could not help but reflect on that when I read this article:
