Wondering where to start? Here are 7 recommendations I recently gave to the Imaginative Conservative:
1. What So Proudly We Hail ([link removed]) : I don’t beat around the bush with this book: you really need to read it. It’s that good. In a recent Wall Street Journal column, Peggy Noonan rightly called it “a stupendous compilation of the best things said by and to Americans.” The selections cover everyone from Nathaniel Hawthorne to Flannery O’Connor to Saul Bellow, from George Washington to Abraham Lincoln to Calvin Coolidge, from Benjamin Franklin to Irving Berlin to George Patton. Noonan said that she “opens it every night at random and always finds something valuable.” Don’t miss it.
2. The Solzhenitsyn Reader ([link removed]) : As Joseph Pearce has written, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn was the rare figure who was “not only a hero but a giant.” And this book offers the perfect way to dig into the Nobel Prize–winning author’s voluminous work. In the words of the Chicago Sun-Times, “This expansive, convenient ‘greatest hits’ fills a gaping void on the shelves for those interested in dipping further into Solzhenitsyn.”
3. Modern Age ([link removed]) : As the historian Wilfred McClay says, Modern Age is “required reading for those who want to engage conservative thought at a high level.” In our contentious and confusing times, this journal exposes you to the best ideas that conservatives of all stripes are wrestling with. Read it and you’ll understand why Modern Age’s circulation has tripled in just a couple of years under editor Daniel McCarthy.
4. The Divine Plan ([link removed]) : You want to understand what real leadership looks like? Then look at how Pope John Paul II and President Ronald Reagan united to confront Soviet Communism. You may think you know the story, but coauthors Paul Kengor and Robert Orlando reveal incredible new depths to the relationship. They draw on their tireless archival research and exclusive interviews with an amazing roster of experts, including historians and biographers George Weigel, Douglas Brinkley, H. W. Brands, John O’Sullivan, and Anne Applebaum, as well as Archbishop Timothy Dolan and Bishop Robert Barron.
5. Conscience and Its Enemies ([link removed]) : Everywhere you see it happening: assaults on religious liberty and traditional morality are growing fiercer. Here, at last, is the counterattack. Robby George, one of America’s most influential thinkers, explodes the myth that the secular liberal elite represents the voice of reason. Commentary calls Conscience and Its Enemies “brilliant,” and the Washington Times says you won’t find “better, or more consequential, commentary on the modern crisis.”
6. J.R.R. Tolkien’s Sanctifying Myth ([link removed]) : Tolkien never goes out of style. And there’s no end to the fascination with the worlds he created. In this book, Brad Birzer takes you on a masterful tour of Tolkien’s Middle-earth legendarium. He reveals the underlying meaning of Middle-earth—political, social, and religious (including Tolkien’s surprisingly specific religious symbolism). Booklist said it perfectly when it called Birzer’s book “essential reading for all Tolkien enthusiasts.”
7. Conservative classics ([link removed]) : Today there’s so much confusion and conflict that it can be hard to say what conservatism means anymore. If you’re seeking answers, it can help to return to classic books from great thinkers like Russell Kirk ([link removed]) , Robert Nisbet ([link removed]) , F. A. Hayek ([link removed]) , and William F. Buckley Jr
([link removed]) .
And that’s just the beginning. We have hundreds more great books, all for 50% off ([link removed]) .
Order your books before the sale ends Tuesday, December 31!
Best,
Jed Donahue
