When I started Moms Demand Action in 2012, gun safety was a third-rail political issue. Leaders often chose inaction because they were afraid of the NRA.

But today, the momentum for change has never been stronger. Americans are supporting gun safety in record numbers. That's because gun safety isn't just good policy; it's good politics. We can pass stronger gun laws and save lives. And by electing Democrats committed to protecting people from gun violence at every level of government – especially governors – we can make sure action is taken.

Gun violence is the horrific but logical outcome of a nation awash in too many guns governed by too few laws. The gun industry, its GOP lawmaker allies, and the Supreme Court are making us less safe each day they continue to stand in the way of commonsense gun safety measures.

And when Republican leaders like Greg Abbott refuse to pass even the most simple measures that could save the lives of our children, in the face of mass shooting after mass shooting in Texas and nationwide, we have to act.
