John,
In a moment, I will ask you to donate to our campaign to create a Georgia where opportunity is available to everyone — regardless of their background. But first, I want to tell you a story about why it’s so important to me to create a state where everyone is given a chance to thrive.
As the daughter of a librarian, I’ve always loved reading and expanding my vocabulary. This passion pushed me to enroll in AP English as a high school Sophomore.
One day in class, I submitted a paper I thought was well written and full of great insight. I patted myself on the back and expected to receive high marks on the paper. However, when I got it back, I was flabbergasted — I received a low grade.
Confused, I asked my teacher why I had received a low mark. She responded by telling me that I used words that were too big and it made the other students uncomfortable. So, she told me, I should simplify my language in class and in assignments.
I responded in a way that only a high school sophomore could cook up: if I couldn’t use my own words in her class, I would not use any.
Eventually, my parents were called by the school to sort the matter out. I agreed to end my silent strike, but my parents made it clear: I was there to learn and improve myself, just like everyone else.
Looking back on this incident, I can’t help but think that Brian Kemp has the same mentality as my English teacher — that the only folks who get the chance to grow are those who look, sound and speak like them.
John, this story is why I believe in One Georgia: we all deserve the chance to grow and thrive, not just some of us. And I believe we all should speak up, and use all the tools and words at our disposal to make ourselves heard.
Thank you for your support during this critical moment,
Stacey Abrams
