In the city of Bamako, Mali, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has ramped up awareness and mass screening campaigns for breast and cervical cancer, encouraging early detection through monthly self-checks and routine exams.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In the spirit of making a sustainable, long-lasting impact in communities through lifesaving aid, MSF launched the Pink October campaign in 2021 to encourage women to get breast and cervical cancer screenings.
In partnership with local health organizations, we screened over 5,000 women in Bamako last year and expanded our efforts in 2022 to screen over 60,400 more. Between January and September of this year, we provided 2,702 chemotherapy sessions and 83 surgical interventions.
In Mali, years of political struggle and armed conflict have created barriers to medical care. Access to specialized health care is even more limited, and women with breast and cervical cancer are facing the brunt of this issue.
MSF provides the full spectrum of women’s health care—including breast cancer screenings and treatment, reproductive healthcare, and mental health support—in more than 70 countries around the world. Support from our generous donor community makes this vital work possible, and for that, we are so grateful.
Our oncology project in Bamako is empowering women with the knowledge to detect early signs of breast cancer and access to specialized care. Additionally, we have carried out close to 300 home visits and over 200 mental health sessions so far in 2022.
