Insurance companies enable the development and expansion of fossil fuel projects by providing insurance coverage. This comes with a long and shameful history of environmental racism, widespread violations of Indigenous rights, the poisoning and polluting of low-income communities, and the acceleration of global warming.
Without insurance coverage, new fossil fuel projects cannot be built. Yet, major insurance companies are enabling the buildout by providing that crucial insurance. Fewer than 10 companies, including Chubb, AIG, and Travelers, insure the vast majority of the oil and gas industry.
We can support efforts to resist fossil fuel development and curb future climate pollution by targeting those companies that provide a key pillar of support: insurance.
