If you had asked me about the 2019 Virginia elections in the months leading up to it, I would have said that the stakes could not have been higher.
Republicans were again leaning on their Trump playbook of invoking hate and bigotry at every turn in order to scare Virginia voters. Creating and exploiting fear in voters has unfortunately become a hallmark of Republican campaigns, which is why I couldn’t have been more elated when that Trumpian playbook once again failed in Virginia and Democrats won control of the Virginia assembly.
This historic win – that you and PFAW played such a central role in achieving – is what gives me hope heading into 2020.
Our victory in a bellwether state like Virginia shows that America is ready to reject the hate, bigotry, fear, and far-right policies that define Trump and Trumpism. Virginia now stands poised to pass commonsense gun reform, expand health care, pay workers a living wage, ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, AND ensure that a fair redistricting process occurs following the 2020 Census.
But fear is a powerful weapon – one that Trump and his allies know how to wield with unmatched skill and ruthlessness. And they’ll have endless resources from their Big Money backers to push out their lies.
