Yesterday was National Coming Out Day! As the first openly gay mayor of Chicago, I work every day to be a champion for our LGBTQ community, including meeting threats to our fundamental rights from SCOTUS head-on.
Yesterday, we celebrated how far we’ve come in the acceptance of LGBTQ people. But, this year’s celebration, which falls over seven years since the landmark SCOTUS Obergefell ruling, is not without challenges.
Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has publicly stated that he wants to review and potentially overturn Obergefell in the foreseeable future. Despite the strides we've made towards progress, this fundamental right (that should be settled law!) could be up for debate once again.
Yesterday was an important holiday -- and we should be proud of what we’ve accomplished together. From state laws enshrining LBGTQ rights to general acceptance in mainstream American society, we have a lot to be proud of.
But this fight is far from over. To protect our rights and advance the LGBTQ community, we will have to keep fighting for equality and justice.
