An important update from Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington

What a year. Here at CREW, we’ve taken some time to reflect on what we’ve worked on this year, and wow—we’ve been busy. In 2019, we took more than 200 legal actions to combat the ethical and legal abuses coming out of the Trump administration.

Below are just a few of this year’s highlights—and if while you’re reading, you’re inspired to donate to CREW to ensure we can keep this important work going in 2020 and beyond, remember that all donations up to $50,000 are being matched between now and December 31st, thanks to a generous CREW donor.

  • In February, CREW Executive Director Noah Bookbinder and CREW Senior Advisor Walter Shaub testified before Congress in support of H.R 1, a groundbreaking democracy reform bill that passed the House soon after. We’re still waiting for the Senate to take action.
  • In June, after several successful CREW complaints, the Office of Special Counsel found that Kellyanne Conway’s egregious and repeated violations of the Hatch Act warranted her removal from federal service. A Congressional hearing about Hatch Act enforcement followed, where a CREW petition with nearly 35,000 signatures calling for Conway’s resignation was submitted into the Congressional records by Rep. Pressley.
  • Seven years after CREW first filed a complaint, and after 5 years of legal battles, major dark money group Americans for Job Security released its donors from 2010 through 2012, in the first major release of dark money donors since Citizens United. Peter Thiel, Richard and Helen DeVos, Sheldon and Miriam Adelson, and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin were all on the donor list.
  • In October, CREW’s investigation into retaliation against government officials uncovered new FBI records about former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe’s termination, which indicated that the DOJ may not have followed FBI regulations.
  • CREW first called for an impeachment inquiry into President Trump’s abuse of power and obstruction of justice in July. When the Ukraine scandal broke, we helped explain the implications and make the case for impeachment hearings. Following Gordon Sondland’s devastating testimony in November, we called for President Trump’s removal from office in a New York Times op-ed. We also put out a new report on the five potential crimes Trump committed in Ukraine.

In 2020, we’ll continue investigating and calling out corruption wherever we see it, working toward substantive reform, and powering the conversation around corruption and abuse of power. If you’d like to ensure we can carry out our mission into 2020 and beyond, make a matched contribution today—your donation will go twice as far in fueling our work to fight corruption.

Thank you for your support,

The CREW Team
