Line 5 is a set of old, 645-mile-long pipelines that carry nearly 23 million gallons of oil a day through the heart of the Great Lakes. These dangerous pipelines threaten the drinking water of millions of people.

Transporting oil and gas through aging infrastructure is extremely risky. And these pipelines in particular have lain at the bottom of the Straits of Mackinac — a busy shipping channel — for more than 60 years!

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recently began developing an Environmental Impact Statement to determine whether to approve a key permit for a new tunnel for Line 5.

So we’re flooding the Army Corps of Engineers with public comments on the proposed Enbridge Great Lakes Tunnel plan. Submit your public comment opposing the new tunnel for Line 5 before the deadline this Friday, October 14th!

Over the last 50 years, Line 5 has leaked 33 times, spilling at least 1.1 million gallons of oil. Allowing this set of pipelines to stay in operation would continue to threaten the Great Lakes and all those whose livelihoods depend on this water supply.

Line 5 and its potential for spills would impact Indigenous communities and their lands where they have rights to fish, hunt and gather wild rice. We can’t let this project move forward!

Line 5 is a focus of the growing anti-fossil fuel movement in the United States. I hope you’ll join Food & Water Watch, Indigenous communities, and our coalition partners in calling for Line 5 to be shut down.
