Physicians With Disabilities
As part of the Health Affairs issue on disability and health, one
article provides some perspective on the experiences of physicians with
disabilities.
Lisa Meeks and coauthors examine mistreatment of physicians with
disabilities
from both coworkers and patients, including threats of physical harm and
offensive remarks related to a disability or other identity trait.
Compared with their nondisabled peers, physicians with disabilities had
a significantly higher likelihood of experiencing mistreatment.
Further, the authors discover that physicians with disabilities were
three times more likely than nondisabled physicians to receive negative
remarks about their race or ethnicity.
The authors write that these findings reveal a need for
disability-focused anti-mistreatment policies and practices.
