My opponent refuses to acknowledge the undisputed reality that climate change is caused by human activity.
John --
I’m Sean Casten, and in 2018 I flipped IL-06 from red to blue. I’m now the first Democrat in nearly 50 years to represent this battleground district in Congress. And I won my first election by running explicitly on the need to take climate action, proving that that is a winning issue.
But I already have a right-wing, climate-crisis-denying mayor running against me. My opponent refuses to acknowledge the undisputed reality that climate change is caused by human activity.
And to make matters worse, RealClearPolitics just downgraded my district to a “Toss-Up” – making this one of the most competitive races of the cycle.
This is going to be a close, expensive race to the finish.
Let me be clear: I’m not a career politician. Before running for Congress, I was a clean energy entrepreneur, dedicating my professional career to addressing climate change.
And since I was elected, I’ve been one of the leading voices in the House for climate change action. As a member of the House Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition (SEEC), I helped rally House Democrats around placing climate at the center of our agenda, which ultimately resulted in passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, the greatest investment in climate action in our nation’s history.
But even if I wasn’t an expert on climate, I’d still know that if the GOP regains power they’ll stop at nothing to rollback any progress we’ve made at tackling the root causes of climate change.
Thanks to your help in 2020, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 117th Congress while we undo the damage of the Trump Administration.
