Dear Friends of 5 Gyres,

We are coming off of a productive trip to South Korea where our team shared science and discussed solutions at the 7th International Marine Debris Conference (7IMDC) and Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Environmental Protection (GESAMP). The conversations and progress made at these global meetings left us feeling inspired and hopeful for the future of our collective work toward a planet free of plastic pollution.

At 7IMDC, we introduced our sector-based approach to addressing plastic pollution. By considering the various industries in which plastic is used, like textiles, agriculture, and car tires, we can work toward more effective solutions. (Learn more about the sectors of plastic pollution in Season 2 of Trash Academy! ([link removed]) )

We'll be publishing a newsroom article ([link removed]) with our key takeaways from the conference, so stay tuned for more 7IMDC and GESAMP updates soon!

DRUMROLL... THE NATIONAL PARK DATA IS IN!

That's a wrap on our Plastic-Free Parks ([link removed]) community science project! More than 14,000 pieces of trash were submitted from 44 sites around the country, from Kenai Fjords National Park to Cuyahoga National Park -- and even the Northern Mariana Islands! Our team is analyzing the data and preparing to publish the final report on November 1.
