The Marc Mauer Racial Justice Award is bestowed on an individual who significantly advances understanding and engagement on issues of race and mass incarceration. The awardee also nominates a nonprofit organization of their choice to receive special recognition.

This year's awardees are David Singleton, Executive Director of Ohio Justice & Policy Center, and Gideon’s Promise.

David Singleton has been working in the field of criminal legal reform for over thirty years. After years of work as a public defender, David joined OJPC as its Executive Director in July 2002. Over the past twenty years, David has worked tirelessly to reduce the size and racial disparity of Ohio’s prison population, as well as to protect the rights and dignity of incarcerated people. Under his leadership, OJPC has helped hundreds of clients return home from prison while also providing thousands of Ohioans with free legal assistance to overcome the barriers created by a past criminal record. Most recently, OJPC played an instrumental role in passing two state bills to respectively eliminate juvenile life without parole and expand opportunities for returning citizens to obtain professional licenses. David is also a Professor of Law at NKU Chase College of Law.

Gideon’s Promise is a nonprofit public defender organization whose mission is to transform the criminal justice system by building a movement of public defenders who provide equal justice for marginalized communities.
