A slightly blurred collage of community photos. A march with yellow signs, two people hugging, a meeting, and a person talking on a megaphone are visible. There is a transparent blue overlay and a semi-transparent lighter blue box with the words "Headwaters Foundation for Justice e-newsletter" in black.<[link removed]>

October's Radical Rest artist: Michelle Defoe
Late in 2021, we released
2022 Radical Rest Calendar<[link removed]>. We invited artists to contribute pieces and reflections about the theme of radical rest, and the role of art and rest in movements. Our second annual calendar, a beautiful collection of art and meditations on rest, is the result.
This month, we are excited to introduce
October's Radical Rest featured artist - Michelle Defoe<[link removed]>! Michelle Defoe is an Ojibwe artist, painter, beadwork artist, and moccasin maker from Red Cliff, Wisconsin, living and working in Minnesota.
Her featured piece is titled "Safe Place."
She shares about the piece, "I chose this piece to submit for radical rest because, even in the midst of a storm, we can find peacefulness and calmness. Finding this “safe place” or “calm place” in the midst of chaos is what helps us process trauma, anxiety, fear and confusion. We can find this place within ourselves. We can share this calmness with our children to role model for them what self-care looks like. We can be that calm place for them until they are able to create that for themselves."
Make sure to keep an eye on our social media platforms over the rest of the month to find out more opportunities to learn about and connect with Michelle and her artwork!
And be sure to
head to our website<[link removed]> to find out more about Michelle and her featured piece!

They are on purple waves and the sky behind them is blue, purple, and black. There are ornamental flowers in the upper corners. On the right is a photo of the artist, Michelle Defoe. She is wearing a black hat and black shirt and has orange and pink hair. She looks directly at the camera.<[link removed]>

Our team invites Indigenous people of all ages to join us by wearing pink and sharing photos on social media using the hashtag #IndigenousPink to raise awareness of breast cancer in Indian Country. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Native women, and is the second leading cause of cancer death. However, all bodies have breast tissue and are at risk for developing breast cancer. Indigenous Pink Day aims to educate Native communities about the importance of early detection, and remind women, men, non-binary, and genderfluid relatives to talk to their doctors about breast cancer screening.
