Today marks the launch of our second annual Canada Animal Welfare Scorecard. This report ranks 55 major food companies, including Tim Hortons, Pizza Pizza, and Metro, on their animal welfare commitments and progress.
Animals raised for food in Canada suffer agonizing conditions. Mother pigs are crammed for nearly their entire lives in filthy crates so small that they are unable to lie down comfortably. Chickens raised for meat are bred to grow so fast that many struggle to even walk. And hens used for eggs are subjected to extreme confinement that inhibits many of their natural behaviours.
Many companies are banning these cruel practices in their operations. In fact, with your help, last year our first Canada scorecard inspired 15 companies to take action! Their progress has tremendous potential to impact animals raised for food in Canada.
But our work can't stop here. While many companies have made progress, others are failing to follow through on their commitments.
