Dear John,
The Gun Sense Majority in the U.S. House passed four landmark gun safety bills this year. It was the first time in 20 years that either chamber of Congress passed major gun safety legislation. H.R. 8 – the bipartisan bill requiring background checks on all gun sales – passed in February and paved the way for even greater action.
The House then went on to address the dangerous Charleston Loophole, make it harder for domestic abusers to access guns in a strong Violence Against Women Act, and appropriate $50 million for gun violence research. But Mitch McConnell's Senate still won't take the action necessary to end gun violence.
That's why we're going to do everything we can to break the NRA's grip on the U.S. Senate and take the presidency away from the NRA's #1 ally — Donald Trump. Are you with us? The Gun Sense Majority in action:
- The bill requiring background checks on all gun sales passed the House by an impressive 50-vote bipartisan majority.
- The House took action to address the Charleston Loophole, making it harder for people to get guns when a background check takes extra time.
- In April, a bipartisan majority in the House passed a sweeping reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, including provisions to disarm abusive dating partners and stalkers.
- The federal government has neglected funding for gun violence research for decades, but the Gun Sense Majority ended that neglect in June when it passed a budget with this critical funding. And after a compromise with the Senate, Congress passed $25 million in research funding just in the last few days.
After all of this, Mitch McConnell's Senate won't take the action we need to end gun violence in America.
All of these measures enjoy strong support from the American public. It's clear the Senate is ignoring the voters and doing the gun lobby's bidding. All while 100 people die, and hundreds more are wounded, every day from gun violence.
It's time for big changes to Mitch McConnell's Senate and the White House. Help us make that happen. Donate what you can today and your contribution will be TRIPLED towards voting out NRA-backed politicians in 2020.
Thanks for all you do.
Sincerely,
Sarah Trumble
