THE SOAPBOX seeks to keep you connected to what’s happening at The Union and share news about our work to oppose anti-democratic forces in America.
ALERT – January 6th hearing tomorrow, Oct. 13: The congressional committee investigating the Jan. 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol has set a hearing for 1:00 P.M. tomorrow, October 13. By all accounts it’ll be a blockbuster. Potential topics include new revelations about the planned seditious conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election, Ginni Thomas’ testimony, deleted Secret Service texts about Trump’s order to go to the U.S. Capitol on January 6, fake electors, and the former president’s fundraising grift.
Jan. 6th hearings set to resume tomorrow
STATE OF THE UNION: We’ve said before that this midterm election is unlike anything any of us have seen. The future of our democracy hangs in the balance with so many election deniers on the ballot. And while the repudiation of Trump and his extremist cult and threats to abortion rights are certainly influencing voter sentiment, concerns about the economy and other issues linger in the minds of the few remaining persuadable voters. The Cook Political Report has some good observations about the volatility of the midterms.
Let people know that their vote matters more than ever.

THE PLAYBOOK: Early and absentee voting is underway across the country. The priority now is getting pro-democracy voters to vote. There will be many distractions and, as the Cook Political Report noted above, constant shifts in public opinion. Please don’t lose focus. We must continue to get people involved in the fight to preserve democracy. Here are some key messages to use this week.
- The need to get involved with get out-the-vote efforts has reached a critical point in the closing weeks to Election Day. The Union is matching volunteers with key battleground GOTV efforts across the county.
- We need more volunteers to join the 61,000+ who are hard at work defending democracy. Sign up today at jointheunion.us and take action from home.
- Plan and protect your vote. Vote411 is a good resource where you can check your registration, voter registration deadlines, and when absentee / early voting starts in your state.
- In a repeat of his violent rhetoric that led to the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, Trump is stirring up his cult to threaten election workers and disrupt the 2022 midterms.
- Secretary of state candidates linked to QAnon pledge to return Trump to the White House in 2024 if they win on November 8. They plan to subvert democracy if voters pick someone else.

THE PULSE: Abortion rights has been a top-tier issue motivating pro-democracy voters ever since the Supreme Court’s ruling overturning Roe v. Wade and the resounding victory for reproductive rights in Kansas. The issue remains a significant factor in this year’s midterms.
Abortion continues to influence voters going into the midterms
2022 midterms are motivating a key voting block: Women voters played a significant role in the 2018 midterms, delivering defeat to Trump extremists in Congress and across the country. The Supreme Court’s decision overturning Roe has energized women voters to get involved in grassroots action in record numbers this year. This critical group of voters is once again poised to change politics for the better.

Trump’s PAC is running ads in battleground states: Trump’s super PAC, MAGA Inc., has begun airing ads and reserving millions of dollars’ worth of airtime to boost his endorsed, election-denying candidates. So far, the new spending is in Nevada, Georgia, and Arizona. The PAC was already on the air in Pennsylvania and Ohio. Trump’s Save America PAC had banked about $90 million at the end of August, money that could be transferred to MAGA, Inc. and used in midterm contests.

Secretary of state candidates pledge to return Trump to the White House in 2024: Last week we highlighted the ominous work of secretary of state candidates tied to the election conspiracy group QAnon. Led by Jim Marchant, the Republican nominee for Nevada’s secretary of state, they have pledged to subvert democracy and declare Trump their state’s winner in the 2024 presidential election. Even if voters pick someone else. But these crazies need to win on November 8th first. As a volunteer with The Union, you can help stop them.

Corporate money floods election denier campaigns: In the aftermath of the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol and Trump’s failed insurrection, some of America’s most iconic brands pledged to not support election deniers in their 2022 reelection bids. Many of these companies have since broken that pledge. Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington has published a report of just how much corporate and trade association money is flowing to Trump’s sedition caucus.

Find out if you have an election denier on your ballot: The Washington Post has created a nifty interactive tool for voters to research election deniers. Use it to see if you have one near you.

Trump’s violent rhetoric riles up his cult: As senior elected Republicans remain silent, Trump continues to use his rallies to talk about imagined conspiracies and stir up extremism. The toxic rhetoric the former president spews advances his desires for chaos and insurrection. It is yet another disgusting performance that could incite his mob to violence.

Threats against election workers on the rise: Election officials across the country continue to receive violent threats for their work to ensure we have free and fair elections. The threats are emboldened by Trump’s violence-themed speeches and his endorsement of extremist groups like the Oath Keepers.
Threats to election workers continue
Securing polling places for midterm elections: As risks to election workers and voters rise, some public officials are taking unprecedented steps to secure polling places. All of this chaos brought to us by Donald Trump.
New meaning to securing the vote
Souls to the Polls Wisconsin: This terrific partner with The Union believes that voting is the power that will build stronger, safer, and more supportive communities. Creating a solid voting bloc of engaged community members in Milwaukee and beyond will bring local and state issues to elected leaders. Be sure to look at this group’s great work to preserve democracy.
