Metro DC DSA Weekly Update for Friday, December 27, 2019

What's On This Week

Comrade,

Here’s a holiday Update, in the hammock between holidays, with only a few new things to note.

The MDC DSA Steering Committee meets 7 PM Thursday, January 2 (the usual Wednesday meeting would fall on New Year’s Eve). Members can access the agenda and a ZOOM link on the #steering channel in MDC DSA Slack.

CAMPAIGNS UP FRONT on Sunday, January 12, 2020 – Kick Off 2020 with Metro DC DSA’s Winter Campaigns Fair & January GBM 3:30 — 5:30 PM   The Festival Center, 1640 Columbia Rd NW · Washington, DC – Save the date for MDC DSA’s first General Body Meeting/Campaigns Fair for 2020. We will have a few business items to discuss but this Campaigns Fair is for members, guests and interested folks wanting to get involved with the chapter’s various campaigns! There will be hot chocolate to warm us up — and feel free to bring some cookies or snacks to share!

THUR January 16 6:30-8:00 PM Come join us for the January Disability Justice Working Group meeting at the Festival Center at 6:30 PM. We’ll be diving into plans for a Disability Town Hall, disability narratives/comics, and reading groups.

SAT January 11, DSA 4 Bernie canvass - Location TBD, 12 noon to 3 PM
It's officially 2020, meaning we only have a few months left to make Bernie the (D)democratic nominee! Come knock doors for Bernie and tell voters how we will transform this country to work for the working class.

Our exact location is TBD. Check the Facebook and Meetup page to find out where we will meet. If this is your first time canvassing for Bernie, first of all, welcome! We will provide a short training at noon, run through the script, teach you how to use VAN, and pair you up with a veteran canvasser. We’ll all gather at a bar afterwards to chat about how the canvass went and discuss future events for Bernie!

AND MORE -- Debate Watch Party a confirmed success! -- The DSA 4 Bernie Workgroup hosted a debate watch party on Thursday the 19th. Approximately 40 Bernie supporters filled tables and chairs in the front room. We watched our guy Bern down the debate stage across two wide-screen TVs. We played debate bingo, with a lucky winner the proud recipient of multiple DSA 4 Bernie buttons—yes, you read that right: Multiple. Buttons. So be sure to look out for the next debate watch party in 2020!

Is Your New Year's Resolution One of The Following:
Start a Revolution? Get exercise? Spend time outdoors? Interact with fellow humans? Well you can knock all that out at once knocking on doors with DSA4 Bernie in the Metro DC Area! Pencil-in January 11th (above) and 18th and look out for more details to come.

Updates in January will be sent Fridays, January 10, 17 and 24. The February Washington Socialist will be sent Friday, January 31 with an article deadline of Saturday, January 25.

January’s Washington Socialist will include a 2019 index for all the stellar and stupendous articles we published this year (channeling the late lamented Stan Lee here). But if you can’t wait, here’s a peek.

Actually existing right-now socialism – This newsletter is published Friday. As the weekend and the week unfold, make sure to keep up with any changes in the events in our calendars by following links we helpfully provide here to Facebook Events pages or Meetup, where the latest information will be found.

What does the MDC DSA local chapter do, week in and week out? See our working groups, caucuses and campaigns in the DMV here.

And speaking of info: Many of our campaigns, working groups and caucuses keep the conversation going between meetings on our MDC DSA Slack platform. If you are a DSA member in good standing and aren’t on our Slack you may not be getting the full picture about the rich array of activities suggested above in the chapter structure link. GOOD READS
>>Centrist bias is not an unfamiliar notion to those of us who grind our teeth at the MSM punditocracy’s inability to give useful attention to the premises of left – or right, as in actual conservatism. But it recently caught the eye of some MSM pundits, starting with Politico’s John Harris and caroming on to the NYT’s David Leonhardt., who focuses here on the wealth tax in two platforms.

>>In the same vein, Vice News runs through the latest polls, notes that Sanders is seriously surging, and that nevertheless the MSM is paying nearly zero attention. https://www.vice.com/en_au/article/m7qjz4/sanders-is-hot-in-the-polls-and-still-treated-like-a-second-tier-candidate/

>> Here’s a nice double review highlighting several books detailing and enriching the Green New Deal by one informed climate polemicist with whom we are familiar and one less known.
