As you’ve likely seen in the news, or read from our emails, the situation in Haiti has become even more challenging than before. Roadblocks, violence, and massive economic and social disruption have prevented travel by staff and patients and led to critical shortages of fuel and food.

Nonetheless, health care must not stop. As I write, my colleagues in Haiti are saving lives and caring for their patients in extreme conditions. Through their efforts, Zanmi Lasante (as PIH is known in Haiti) remains a trusted pillar of stability providing health care to nearly one in three Haitians. 

We are forced to ration fuel, limit staff movement, engage security experts, and deepen our use of solar power, satellite phones, and alternative fuel sources. Through these efforts, every Zanmi Lasante health facility has remained open, and we will continue to do whatever it takes to ensure our patients’ right to health.
