In September 1965, the Filipino grape workers in Delano, California, went on strike. United as the Agriculture Workers Organizing Committee, they demanded better wages and working conditions.

But they had a problem.

When Filipino workers went on strike, the farmers would hire more Mexican workers to replace them, pitting the workers against each other.

However, union leaders Larry Itliong and Philip Vera-Cruz recognized the power of diversity. So, they reached out to the National Farm Workers Association, led by the charismatic Cesar Chavez, to unite!

Together they formed the United Farm Workers of America.

What began as a labor dispute in the fields of Delano then blossomed into a civil rights struggle, a movement to achieve justice for farmworkers.
