Folks — October represents LGBTQ History Month, and today is National Coming Out Day. And to commemorate this month, I want to share what’s on my mind right now:

When I came out in college, I knew I was interested in a career in public service, but I feared that I would have to face a serious choice between pursuing the field of my dreams or living my authentic life openly.

Seeing others in the LGBTQ community demonstrate acts of courage by coming out, being themselves, and being public about who they are and who they love — I came to realize that I could do both. I could run for office and be honest about who I am.

When I became the first openly gay Senator in our nation's history, I understood that I needed to use this extraordinary opportunity to make a difference in people's lives. That's why I ran for office in the first place — not to make history, but to make a difference. And folks like you supported me because you wanted to make a difference, too. Now, I'm asking you to keep going.

The House of Representatives passed the Respect for Marriage Act earlier this year, and soon it will come to a vote in the Senate. Will you sign on in support of this crucial legislation to federally protect marriage equality and further enshrine protections for members of the LGBTQ community?

SIGN ON

Over the years, we have made incredible progress in the fight for equality. But folks, we cannot mistake that progress for a total victory.

Republican-led state legislatures across the country continue to pass harmful legislation, especially targeting transgender people and LGBTQ youth.

And when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Justice Clarence Thomas called for Obergefell v. Hodges — the case that established nationwide marriage equality — to be “reconsidered.”

For all of the progress we have made, there is still a LOT more to be done. And one of the first things we can do is pass the Respect for Marriage Act to federally protect marriage equality. So, will you sign on and call for this legislation to be passed?

SIGN ON

Thank you for all that you do. This month, and every month, let’s celebrate the strides we’ve made for LGBTQ rights, and let’s also recommit ourselves to work towards the day when all LGBTQ Americans can live in a world where they feel safe, accepted, and loved.
