Trigger Warning: This email contains information related to domestic violence and gun violence. We are including it because we feel it illustrates the urgency of our effort and the critical reason female candidates need and deserve an organization like ours.
Hi there,
October marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and as an organization focused on electing, uplifting, and supporting women across the country, this month means a lot to us.
Here are some scary statistics according to Everytown:
❌ 3.7 million women have reported being threatened with a gun by an intimate partner.
❌ Access to a gun makes it 5x more likely that the abusive partner will kill his female victim.
❌ An average of 70 women are shot and killed by an intimate partner each month.
❌ Black women are 2x as likely to be fatally shot by an intimate partner compared to white women.
These numbers represent real American women who are being failed by our current government’s inaction. As we’ve stated before, it is unsafe to be a woman in America — especially when the majority of lawmakers in our country are men.
We need leaders who will care enough to prioritize critical gun safety measures that will help protect women facing domestic violence. Will you help us elect female gun-safety candidates this November by pitching in $15 to our Candidate Support Fund today? [link removed]
There’s a reason domestic abusers can still buy a gun in most states – this issue isn’t a priority for most male politicians. (Come to think of it, neither was reproductive healthcare access until it re-entered the discourse and became a winning issue for Democratic male politicians.)
But the fact of the matter is, our majority-male (73%) government isn’t focused on the issues that affect women. According to Everytown, “Federal law prohibits domestic abusers from having guns, but only if they have been married to, have lived with, or have a child with the victim. It does not otherwise prohibit abusive dating partners from having guns. This gap in the law is known as the ‘boyfriend loophole’ and has become increasingly deadly. The share of homicides committed by dating partners has been increasing for three decades, and now women are as likely to be killed by dating partners as by spouses.”
All of our candidates support gun safety measures, and nearly all will be on the ballot against NRA-backed candidates in a matter of weeks. It is critical that we help get these female candidates elected, and work to protect the lives of millions of women in our country.
