John,
I want to tell you a story about Juan Macias, a gun violence survivor who, like me, lived through unimaginable tragedy. But for him, justice has yet to come.
Juan “Gunny” Macias got his nickname from his time in the Marines where he survived war zones – but it was while sitting in a pew at First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs in Texas that Gunny was shot over and over again by a gunman with an AR-15 assault rifle. Twenty-six church-goers were killed in the massacre, and Gunny was one of more than 20 others who were injured. Yet right now, the government is actively blocking Gunny and the survivors from justice.

Gunny and the other survivors of the horrific attack in Sutherland Springs deserve better — especially from our government. As a gun violence survivor, I know that justice doesn’t take away the pain, but it shows that our country and our community care about us, taking accountability to ensure this never happens again.
