2022 Shareholder Impact Review: Changing Corporations for Good

This year saw record-breaking votes as shareholders united to drive company progress on key issues including climate. Shareholder advocacy has moved to center stage. As You Sow’s ten majority votes and 41% median vote demonstrate overwhelming support for companies to develop and steer a clear path toward reduced systemic risk, long-term sustainability, and increased justice.

The report < [link removed] > provides a comprehensive listing of each engagement and a summary of highlights. Our 196 engagements addressed 11 issue areas: 78 on climate change; 40 on diversity, equity, and inclusion; 24 on racial justice; 18 on ocean plastics, single-use plastics, and recyclability; 10 on political spending; six on petrochemicals; five on pesticides; four on antibiotics misuse and overuse; four on corporate misalignment with investing; four on governance; and three on water use.

Shareholders can ensure a stronger, more dynamic economy into the future while building a safe, just, and sustainable world for all.

Fossil Free Finance and Insurance Ratings

Fossil Fuel Finance and Fossil Fuel Insurance < [link removed] > ratings are the latest additions to the Fossil Free Funds < [link removed] > investment tool. The new fund ratings score investment portfolios based on their exposure to banks that are financing fossil fuels and insurance companies that are underwriting and investing in coal, oil, and gas.“By continuing to provide support to high-carbon companies and projects, financial institutions are exacerbating the climate crisis and delaying the transition to a clean energy economy,” said Danielle Fugere, president of As You Sow.

Commercial and investment banks' carbon-intensive funding is fundamentally incompatible with reaching the 1.5°C-aligned global goal necessary to prevent catastrophic climate harm.

Climate change creates financial risk and investors should be aware of which companies in their portfolios are contributing to those risks.
