Acre by acre, summer by summer, we are losing the sagebrush steppe ecosystem—the very habitat that already-imperiled birds like the Gunnison Sage-Grouse depend on for survival. If these wildfires continue to rage larger, hotter, and more frequent due to a rapidly changing climate and the spread of invasive grasses, this one-of-a-kind bird and others could find themselves in an even more dire situation.
Today’s threats make Audubon’s decades-long advocacy on behalf of birds like the Gunnison Sage-Grouse even more critical. Right now, we’re working with Congress to ensure adequate funding is available for effective on-the-ground action in relevant states. We’re also actively involved in The Bureau of Land Management's planning effort to improve the management of critical habitats.
