Stocks Tumble, Nasdaq Drops to Two-Year Low

CNBC: Stocks closed lower on Monday with the Nasdaq Composite index falling to the lowest level in two years as tech shares continue to be the hardest hit in this bear market because of spiking interest rates. The declines came as JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon warned that the U.S. would likely fall into a recession in 2023, and that it may not be just a mild economic contraction as some economists have projected. A policy change weighed on semiconductor stocks after the Biden administration announced new export controls that limit U.S. companies selling advanced computing semiconductors and related manufacturing equipment to China. Tech shares have also been hit the hardest in this sell-off as rising rates expose their relatively high valuations and raise their cost of capital (CNBC). Wall Street Journal: The S&P 500 turned lower after opening with slight gains, shedding 27.27 points, or 0.7%, to close at 3612.39. The Dow Jones Industrial Average edged down 93.91 points, or 0.3%, to 29202.88 while the Nasdaq Composite fell 110.30 points, or 1%, to 10542.10 (Wall Street Journal).

Biden Sinks Below 50 Percent Approval on Issues Americans Care Most About

Daily Wire: With less than a month to go until the midterm elections, President Joe Biden’s approval ratings are in the dumper. Now, a new poll shows just how bad things really are. Biden’s approval rating is less than 50% on every single one of the top 10 issues Americans most care about (Daily Wire). Ipsos Poll: The economy (30%), crime or corruption (9%), and the end of national abortion rights (8%) are the top three issues for Americans this week. Windy City Exodus: Tyson Foods Leaves Chicago for Arkansas

Daily Wire: Tyson Foods announced last week that all employees in the Chicago area would be relocated, rendering the meat and poultry company one of multiple businesses to pull operations from the Windy City in recent months. Beginning next year, Tyson staffers will relocate from Chicago and Dakota Dunes, South Dakota, toward the firm’s corporate headquarters in Springdale, Arkansas, which will receive upgrades designed to enhance worker creativity and collaboration (Daily Wire). Fox Business: “You’re talking about a situation where you have a hollowed out economy, where you have businesses leaving, there are no jobs,” Heritage Foundation senior research fellow in the Center for Health and Welfare Policy Robert Moffit told Fox News Digital last month. “And the people who are desperately hurt by this are mostly low income and black and minority residents who suffer the most from this high crime.” Moffit’s comments came after McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski took aim at Chicago in a mid-September speech, arguing that the city’s rising crime rates have made it increasingly difficult for companies to operate or find employees (Fox Business).

Kamal Harris Says, “Nobody Should Have to Go to Jail for Smoking Weed,” Despite Her Record for Pot Prosecutions

Hill: Vice President Kamala Harris claimed that ‘no one’ should go to jail for smoking marijuana over the weekend, despite the fact she oversaw 2,000 convictions as a prosecutor in San Francisco. ‘We are also changing, y’all might have heard that this week, the federal government’s approach to marijuana,’ Harris said on Saturday at an event in Austin, Texas. ‘Because the bottom line there is: Nobody should have to go to jail for smoking weed,’ the vice president continued (Hill). Russian-Speaking Hackers Claim Responsibility for Disrupting 14 American Airport Websites

CNN: More than a dozen public-facing airport websites, including those for some of the nation’s largest airports, appeared inaccessible Monday morning, and Russian-speaking hackers claimed responsibility. No immediate signs of impact to actual air travel were reported, suggesting the issue may be an inconvenience for people seeking travel information. The 14 websites include the one for Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. The hacking group known as Killnet listed multiple US airports as targets. It stepped up activity to target organizations in NATO countries after Russia’s February invasion of Ukraine. The loosely organized “hacktivists” are politically motivated to support the Kremlin but ties to Moscow are unknown. The group claimed responsibility last week for knocking offline US state governments websites (CNN). Axios: DDoS attacks work by overwhelming a targeted server, service or network with a flood of internet traffic and either force websites offline or make them very slow to respond to legitimate traffic. The affected airports included Chicago O’Hare International Airport, Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and New York City’s LaGuardia Airport (Axios).

Russia Launches Slew of Missiles Across Ukrainian Cities, Killing at Least 14

Wall Street Journal: Waves of Russian missiles slammed into Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities in one of the broadest and most intense barrages of the war, in response to a weekend attack Moscow blamed on Ukraine that seriously damaged a bridge connecting Russia to occupied Crimea. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia had carried out dozens of strikes using missiles as well as Iranian-made drones to target the country’s electrical grid and other civilian infrastructure. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday warned of a harsh response if Kyiv were to conduct further “terrorist attacks” following weeks of battlefield losses that culminated in the attack on the strategically important Kerch Strait Bridge (Wall Street Journal). BBC: The US said “brutal” attacks had hit non-military targets and promised ongoing military aid, including advanced air defense systems. United Nations chief Antonio Guterres said he was “deeply shocked” (BBC). CNBC: The full number of casualties from the attacks is not yet clear, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said there were least 14 dead and 97 injured. In addition to the human toll, the strikes damaged significant parts of Ukraine’s energy grid, prompting the nation’s energy ministry to announce it would halt exports of electricity to the European Union starting Tuesday (CNBC).
