Monday Nature Mystery

We are pleased to announce the winner of our Monday Nature Mystery, Lisa Benoit. (Please email your snail mail address and preference for a hat or tote bag to [email protected].)

Congratulations to Lisa for identifying the Eastern Wormsnake (Carphophis amoenus). According to the Virginia Herpetological Society, these small snakes are secretive and occur in forested and wooded habitats where the soil allows burrowing. They mostly eat worms, but also slugs, snails, and insects. These harmless snakes are distributed throughout Virginia.

Please remember to write the common name, being mindful of hyphens, uppercase and lowercase letters and always include the Latin name in parentheses. To learn more about bird names click here.
