Hi John,
It has been very busy these last few months! While our campaign did not get the primary election results we had hoped for, our community advocacy continues undeterred, and I am emailing all of you with some exciting updates.
I had the honor of recently joining an amazing statewide non-profit 501c4 advocacy organization, Initiate Justice Action (IJ Action), to help lead organizational strategy and development. Launched in 2021, IJ Action mobilizes the power of Californians impacted by incarceration to fight for progressive policies that uplift and empower system-impacted people, their families, and their communities.

Our sister 501c3 organization, Initiate Justice, has a membership of nearly 50,000 currently incarcerated people and houses the Institute of Impacted Leaders, a 12-week organizing training program that teaches system-impacted people about how to do policy advocacy, community organizing, and to advocate for themselves and their loved ones in prison.
Initiate Justice was a lead partner on Proposition 17, which passed with nearly 60% of the vote in 2020 and restored voting rights for roughly 50,000 Californians on parole. Over the past few years, Initiate Justice has successfully fought for statewide legislation that eliminated medical and dental copayments for people inside California jails and prisons, prohibited racial discrimination in sentencing and convictions, and brought us closer to ending the disastrous War on Drugs by allowing for alternate pleas for individuals with drug-related convictions.
IJ Action is building on this momentum, and we’ve set our sights on some big goals for 2023 and 2024 – state legislation restoring the right to vote for all incarcerated Californians and a statewide ballot measure repealing the draconian Three Strikes Law. These are massive undertakings that will require mass mobilization of our membership, allies, and supporters.
If you agree that we must end mass incarceration and our prison-industrial complex, please donate to IJ Action, and sign up for our email program to stay updated on our work. The movement for abolition and real public safety will take all of us working together fighting for a brighter and more just future. Let’s do this.
