As I watch the incredible events unfolding in Iran with a mixture of awe and sorrow. I am deeply moved by the courage displayed by the people fighting for their most basic human rights in the streets, old and young, rich and poor, men and women alike.
I have spent the last four years working on a book that deals with Iran’s first revolution. I tell that story through the experience of a young American who gave his life for the same principles that so many Iranians are fighting and dying for, once again, today.
An American Martyr in Persia: The Epic Life and Tragic Death of Howard Baskerville uncovers the story of a twenty-two year-old Christian missionary from Nebraska who went to Iran in 1907 to teach English and preach the gospel, but who ended up fighting alongside his students in Iran’s first democratic revolution. Baskerville redefined sacrifice, salvation, and solidarity for many. He remains well known throughout Iran, but most Americans have not heard of him.

Howard Baskerville witnessed the struggle of young Iranians fighting for their rights. Despite being told by his church and by his government that the conflict was none of his business, he was willing to sacrifice himself to help in that cause. Now, a century removed from that time, Iranians are still fighting for the same issues that Baskerville and his students died for: that people should be masters of their own fate; that they should be free to act and think without coercion; that they should have a say in the decisions that rule their lives.
