See our 2022 legislative victories.
Friend –
As you know, every year, ACLU California Action advocates to enact laws that strengthen and protect civil rights and civil liberties for all Californians.
Here are a few of the victories we delivered thanks in large part to your activism and advocacy:
* Eliminated the state's outdated and discriminatory loitering law (SB 357): Repeals the law that has enabled targeted and discriminatory policing of Black and trans communities and allows people who have been convicted using this subjective law to clear their names.
* Ended pregnancy criminalization (AB 2223): Ensures that no person in our state is ever investigated, prosecuted, or imprisoned for ending a pregnancy or experiencing a pregnancy loss.
* Expanded the Racial Justice Act to apply to cases before 2020 (AB 256): Provides equal opportunity to pursue justice for those who have already been harmed by racial bias and discrimination in our criminal legal system.
* Ended the use of racist place names (AB 2022): Identifies all places where the derogatory term for Indigenous women is used and establishes a process for governing bodies to rename these places with tribal input.
* Protected voting rights (AB 2841): Requires notification to voters before their registration is canceled, specifically protecting disabled voters.
At the end of each legislative session, we are reminded of how critical it is to have leaders that fight for ACLU values in our statehouse.
As we enter the mid-term elections, now is the time to know where state legislative candidates stand on justice and democracy. Learn more about candidate positions in key districts. <[link removed]>
