Dear friends,

As we approach the end of the holiday season, I am reflecting on our year in advocacy. All of you have done amazing work making calls, getting the word out on social media, and pushing your elected officials to support our community. While you’ve been working in your local communities, we’ve been fighting for our rights on Capitol Hill. Here are just a few of the things we were able to do, thanks to your support:

  • We fought back against the dangerous Public Charge rule, joining an amicus brief supporting continued lawsuits to block it.
  • We supported integrated employment by asking Congress to pass the Transformation to Competitive Employment Act.
  • We advocated for the Free Speech for All Act, which would expand access to alternative and augmentative communication methods for everyone who needs them.
  • We pushed back against restraint and seclusion in schools, by supporting the Keeping All Students Safe Act and suing Fairfax County Public Schools for extensive use of restraint.

All of these fights will continue in the coming year, and we’ll need your help to win victories for our community. In 2020, Congress will formally introduce the Keeping All Students Safe Act. We’ll have to fight harder than ever to defend immigrants with disabilities from cruel and discriminatory policies. We’ll also continue to stand against discrimination in the medical system, including in organ transplantation.

These battles are not won in a single day, or even a year — but we’re committed to the long fight. With your support, we can make sure that autistic voices are heard in the halls of power for many years to come. Will you help sustain our movement by making an end of year donation to ASAN?

Sincerely,

Sam Crane
