| | Support Let's End Food Insecurity and Climate Change Due to Food Waste Although we have made progress towards building a better world, climate change is a serious threat to all of us, while too many people have been left behind in terms of food insecurity. This is especially true for the LGBTQ+ community. During the pandemic, according to survey data from the U.S. Census Bureau, LGBT adults living in the U.S. were nearly twice as likely to be experiencing food insecurity than non-LGBT adults, with just over 13% of LGBT adults reporting living in a household that experienced food insecurity compared to 7.2% of non-LBGT adults. And according to Williams Institute analysis of Census Bureau data, just over 17 percent of LGBT people of color faced food insufficiency between July and October 2021, compared to 6 percent of non-LGBT white people. And even outside of the pandemic, hunger remains a big (but rarely discussed) issue for LGBTQ+ people. Our friends at Sodexo are commemorating their 10th WasteLESS Week, which focuses on simple, specific, and effective things everyone can do to waste less food both at work and at home in service of ending food insecurity and bettering the environment. They've got some great guides and ways to measure the impact of your actions, as well as ways to monitor how much food goes in your trash over a week. We hope you'll consider taking some small actions to waste LESS, all year long! |

| | Something to Talk About...Live! The Lasting Legacy Of Matthew Shepard Matthew Shepard lost his life to an anti-LGBTQ+ hate crime on October 12, 1998. His legacy, and the legacy of those who loved him, lives on 24 years later at a time of contradiction. Laramie has become a safe-haven for LGBTQ+ people and their families at the same time that anti-LGBTQ+ legislation is being introduced in statehouses across the country. Join us this Thursday, October 13 at 4:30 PM ET / 1:30 PM PT for Something to Talk About Live! where we will be discussing "In Wyoming, scene of infamous gay hate crime an unlikely LGBTQ haven", by Camille Camdessus, which appeared on Yahoo! News. We're honored to welcome Judy Shepard and Dennis Shepard, founding board members of the Matthew Shepard Foundation, to the conversation! As always, you can find us on Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, and Twitter. To learn more--and to check out our discussion questions in advance--visit pflagnation.al/STTALive-101322. |
