Dear John,

Today, we celebrate Indigenous people across our country. This day signifies not only the incredible progress we’ve made to better represent, support, and listen to our Indigenous community — it signifies the work that still remains in our fight to ensure each and every person in this country has the resources they need to thrive.

This year, we now have eight Indigenous people serving in the United States House of Representatives. The importance of electing leaders who bring a new perspective — and who are so often underrepresented in our country’s highest level of government — cannot be emphasized enough.

The reality that people in power have violated treaties, refused representation, and left Indigenous communities’ needs unmet is simply unacceptable in a country that champions equality for all. And this November, I will be honored to work with leaders like Mary Peltola, Kaiali’i Kahele, Sharice Davids, and Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan in the fight to be a voice for our most vulnerable communities.

Working with Senator Tom Brewer to enact Indigenous Peoples Day as an official state holiday in Nebraska has been among my most gratifying accomplishments in the Nebraska Legislature. But while today represents a good starting point for uplifting our Indigenous communities, we must commit to allyship and justice for Indigenous people every. single. day.

In the fights for clean air and water, equitable representation, and tribal rights, I affirm my own dedication to advocating for and standing alongside Native communities here in Nebraska and across the country.

Today, let us honor these vast and beautiful Indigenous histories, their cultures and contributions, and the resilience of native people in the face of oppression that still persists.

Together,

Patty Pansing Brooks
