Celebrating Columbus Day and Italian-American Heritage Oct. 10, 2022 Dear Friend, Boston's Christopher Columbus still sits locked away inside storage, but the contributions of his explorations and especially those of Italian Americans will aren't something that can every be canceled, and that's something we all should feel very thankful about. Reading Rasheed Walters' piece in this morning's edition of the Boston Herald, I'm reminded of just how much radical progressives want to erase the meaning of Columbus Day. Walters writes: Sadly, cancel culture has made Columbus Day one of its main targets. In 2021, the non-elected acting Mayor of Boston, Kim Janey, altered Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples Day in order to curry favor among the woke mob for a mayoral election she lost. Even though November is Native American Heritage Month and Nov. 25 is Native American Heritage Day, African Americans celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Juneteenth, the Irish celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, and Americans of all stripes celebrate July 4th. Boston’s Italians got one day — now taken away — and their Columbus statue was vandalized and decapitated. How is that equity and diversity? I hope you'll join me in taking a few moments today to thank Italian Americans for their contributions to our great nation. On behalf of the Massachusetts Republican Party, I wish you and yours a very happy Columbus Day.
