What I Saw at the Border: There Is No Border |
Eyewitness account: Daily Signal reporter Virginia Allen recently traveled to Texas and spent three days near the border talking with local leaders, citizens, and illegal aliens themselves.
- Over and over, Allen watched as immigrants crossed the border and waited casually for Border Patrol agents to pick them up, knowing that they would soon be released into the U.S.
- “I was surprised by how much of a well-oiled machine illegal immigration has become,” Allen writes.

Shocking Crime Rates, Brought to You by the Left’s Embrace of Lawlessness |
In the news: The FBI’s latest crime report revealed a staggering 5.6% increase in violent crime in 2021 compared with 2020’s already high rate.
- This is likely a major undercount. Of more than 18,000 law enforcement agencies around the country, the FBI received data from only 9,800.
- This is what conservatives predicted would result from the Left’s blatant embrace of “defund the police” and rogue prosecutors who refuse to prosecute criminals.
Our take: “These numbers are shameful. And it’s even more shameful that these numbers continue to increase year over year,” write Heritage senior legal fellow Cully Stimson and legal fellow Zack Smith, which you can read here.

Advocating for a Foreign Policy Third Way |
Failure of elites: “Foreign policy of, by, and for the elites, in both of its forms—reckless neoconservative hyper-interventionism and soulless neoliberal globalism—has failed,” writes Heritage President Kevin Roberts in a powerful article in National Review.
- The Heritage Foundation advocates a “third way” that puts America first, he writes.
- U.S. foreign policy ought to be the handmaiden of good domestic policy: fiscally responsible and protective of Americans’ freedom, liberty, and sovereignty.
- Heritage’s consistent, principled response to Vladimir Putin’s war against Ukraine is an excellent and ongoing example of what we mean.

Is Big Tech About to Get Its Wings Clipped? |
On the horizon: The behemoth that is Big Tech may soon find its power checked, as it faces serious challenges on two fronts.
Big Tech’s moment in court: The Supreme Court said it would take up Gonzalez v. Google, which could finally bring much-needed clarity to Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996.
Congress prepares a volley: The House of Representatives approved a package of three antitrust bills that would begin to rein in the power and influence of Big Tech companies.
- These bills are a big step to “enforcing current antitrust laws to promote competitiveness—without expanding or unduly empowering the federal bureaucracy,” write Heritage experts.
- Read more about the package of antitrust bills here.

Philip N. Truluck, Former Heritage Executive Vice President |
Rest in peace: Philip N. Truluck, former Heritage Foundation executive vice president, chief operating officer, and senior adviser, died Oct. 6 in Charleston, South Carolina.
Lasting legacy: Heritage Foundation Founder Ed Feulner and Board of Trustees Chairman Barb Van Andel-Gaby released a statement celebrating his life.
-
“The Heritage Foundation is the organization it is today because of Phil’s incredible work over a period measured not just in years, but in decades. He was an astute policy analyst, the prime mover behind the development of Heritage’s physical presence on Capitol Hill, and the man largely responsible for the personnel recruitment and development system that has enabled Heritage to have such tremendous intellectual influence in the conservative movement and in Washington.”

New Video Exposes the Left’s Takeover of Madison’s Home |
Madison is missing: If you visit Montpelier expecting to learn about James Madison’s role as a statesman and his contributions to America’s founding, you’ll be sorely disappointed. Instead, you’ll get a distorted version of American history brought to you by leftist organizations like the Southern Poverty Law Center. Examples include:
- All but two of the galleries and exhibits focus on slavery and Jim Crow.
- The exhibit on the Constitution focuses on slavery rather than on the meaning and significance of the Constitution or Madison’s role in shaping it.
- The exhibit includes Southern Poverty Law Center materials on the Marxist-based “critical race theory” propaganda.
Our take: As Heritage senior policy analyst Brenda Hafera explains, “Our principles and character are our Founders’ legacy, and our reciprocal duty is the watchful guarding of those principles and that character.”

Support the Heritage Oversight Project and Keep Washington Accountable |
Taking the government to court: After the raid on Mar-a-Lago, it’s clear that the radical Left will stop at nothing to silence its political opponents, including weaponizing law enforcement. Heritage’s Oversight Protect sued the Department of Justice and the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) after their refusal to hand over all communications between NARA and the Biden White House.
Join the fight: We are working to provide transparency for the American people, but we need you to help to get it done. Learn how you can help >>
