MediaJustice organizer Erin Shields holds a megaphone at a rally to #StopRacistTwitter. Overlayed text reads: "Confront Hate Online - Help Us Hold Big Tech Platforms Accountable in 2020. Donate Now."Dear Friend,

The internet is constantly expanding our ability to interact, access resources, and collaborate worldwide. Things may move fast in tech, but with supporters like you MediaJustice is preventing historic inequities and discrimination from further multiplying in this digital age.

When you think of how many of us rely on YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook (including its WhatsApp and Instagram platforms) to communicate daily, the need to hold corporations accountable for hate speech and online attacks against women, immigrants, religious minorities, LGBTQIA+ and other people of color becomes even more urgent.

We have won significant victories already, such as Facebook agreeing to an independent civil rights audit, banning surveillance app developers, and limiting white nationalist accounts. We did all this through grassroots organizing with MediaJustice Network members, coalition building with allies, direct and online actions supported by people like you.

At the same time, these corporations continue to take and defend actions putting vulnerable users of color at risk, including Twitter's refusal to ban white supremacists and Facebook’s differing standards for politicians’ posts and advertisements; which not only harms individual users but our democratic processes.

It’s not “just words”— tragedies like the ones in Charlottesville, Gilroy, and El Paso this year were caused by white supremacists targeting communities of color, encouraged by the racism coming from the White House, and organized through social media. Social media platforms are also allowing the spread of misinformation to Black and migrant communities about participating in next year's census and elections, while failing to prevent fear-mongering content about these groups to reach others. The stakes in this fight couldn't be higher.

We’re entering a critical year for making social media platforms safer and more equitable for all. Join us in holding big tech accountable in 2020 by making a donation today!

Sincerely,

Myaisha and the rest of Team MediaJustice
