Joe Burns
is a veteran union negotiator and labor lawyer with over 25 years experience negotiating labor agreements. He is currently the Director of Collective Bargaining for the Association of Flight Attendants, CWA.

A surge in strikes have swept the country, igniting a resurgence in the labor movement. From Starbucks workers, Amazon warehouse workers, HomeGrown workers to educators, nurses, carpenters, and railroad workers - to name a few.

This upswing in activity is showing no signs of letting up as more workers win unionization elections and the UPS contract and potential strike of 330,000 workers is looming in 2023. Big business is determined to maximize profits and will try to force working people to pay for inflation through attacks on already battered living standards.

Seattle has been an epicenter of the strikes fueling this wave. And Seattle DSA has played an important role with our strike support, members playing a leading role in unionization drives, and developing community support.  However, the more this surge continues, the more we must grapple with the state of the labor movement, the labor bureaucracy, how to defeat business unionism, how to win strong contracts, and the role of socialists in the labor movement.  Joe Burns’ book Class Struggle Unionism addresses these issues and more!

On the Frontlines of the Labor Surge:

Salting (at Amazon) & Peppering-
Presentation from Portland DSA Labor Committee

We’ll also have an exciting presentation from Portland DSA’s Labor Committee on Salting (in Amazon and elsewhere) & Peppering (Peppering is the labor term for a person who chooses a union job for the purpose of strengthening that union.)

And we’ll have a discussion and vote on a bylaw amendment.

Please read the bylaw amendment with friendly amendments being proposed so you are prepared to discuss and vote:
