Meet BYD at Minnie's Bar in Sunset park at 6:45pm on Thursday, October 13th to connect with Democratic candidates in competitive fall races.
We'll hear from Assembly Member Mathylde Frontus, who's running for re-election in Assembly District 46, which stretches from Coney Island to Bay Ridge, and Iwen Chu, who's running in the newly-drawn 17th State Senate District, which connects Gravesend, Bensonhurst and Sunset Park. They'll give us the latest campaign updates, and explain how we can help them defeat right-wing Republican challengers in November.
Then, we'll convene our newly-reactivated caucuses, to discuss ways BYD can drive important discussions around local and national issues!
The Women's Caucus
Chaired by Kellan Calder, the Women's Caucus will discuss issues and advocacy measures that affect femme-identifying people. This is a space to empower advocacy and education that will make Brooklyn and NYC a better place for femme people!
The Policy Caucus
Chaired by Madeline Knight, the Policy Caucus will identify issues that reflect BYD's mission and values. The Caucus will create BYD's first policy platform and lead advocacy efforts to push those policies forward!
This may be BYD's most important meeting of the year. We hope you'll join us!
Support Iwen Chu with BYD and Council Member Justin Brannan!
After you meet Iwen at our General Election Kickoff on Thursday, join BYD and our friend Council Member Justin Brannan to support her and engage with voters about the issues on their minds in this critical election!
Iwen is a proud immigrant mom and a long-time public servant running in the newly-drawn 17th State Senate District, which connects Gravesend, Bensonhurst and Sunset Park.
Meet us at the Stars & Stripes Democratic Club at 7321 15th Avenue at noon on Saturday, October 15th to knock on doors and get the word out about Iwen's groundbreaking campaign!
Meet BYD's New Southern Regional VP: Carlos Calzadilla!
Carlos J. Calzadilla is an activist and community organizer who has worked on numerous progressive campaigns. He lives in Red Hook and is the Director of Community Relations for State Senator Julia Salazar, where he focuses on NYCHA public housing organizing and policy. During the pandemic, he led relief efforts as the co-director for Red Hook Relief. He is also a Democratic County County Committee member and reformer.
Carlos has worked on several electoral campaigns in Southern Brooklyn. He was the campaign manager of Jacqui Painter’s successful insurgent District Leader campaign, and of Julio Peña III’s re-election campaign. He was also the Campaign Adviser for State Senator Andrew Gounardes’ successful re-election campaign. He also worked as the Community Liaison for former Council Member Carlos Menchaca. During the Trump administration, Carlos fought for immigrant rights and led several successful efforts to stop deportations.
We're excited to have Carlos on board during this critical time for Democratic candidates in southern Brooklyn!
