Hi John.
I know a lot of Kansans are frustrated by partisanship and political games these days. That goes for both sides of the aisle, which is why it’s important to stand up when I disagree with my own party.
It’s understandable when people have honest disagreements. But at the end of the day, people need solutions to lower their costs, strengthen their schools, and keep their communities safe. We can’t just remain divided for the sake of partisan politics. Kansans need solutions – not more extremism and division.
So today, I wanted to share how we can build a better future. Please feel free to forward this message anyone you know.
It was great to check-in with former Kansas Senator Pat Roberts at my alma mater, Johnson County Community College, last year. Senator Roberts retired last term and I was honored to work with him during his time in office to make a difference for Kansas. We both love our state and would work to find common ground.
I’ll always work with anyone, in either party, who has a good idea that can make a difference for Kansas. My focus is on concrete and bipartisan solutions to build a better future, with more jobs and lower prices.
This critical work begins by fighting corruption and extremism across the political spectrum so we can deliver results for hardworking Kansans. That’s true for both parties, which is why I’ve stood up to my own party on several occasions.
For example, I –
• Stood up to leaders in my own party and stopped congressional pay raises. At a time of rising prices, the last people who should get a raise are members of Congress.
• Stood up to my party leaders again to stop insider stock trading in Congress. We’ve seen officials appear to use their privilege for personal gain. This is absolutely unacceptable. Members of Congress shouldn’t be able to use inside information to buy and sell stocks.
• Pushed the President to reopen closed oil refineries and get gas prices down. I also stood up to my party’s leaders by introducing a bill to suspend the federal gas tax and voted to support American energy and clean energy production.
• Demanded House leaders get our debt under control by honoring Pay-As-You-Go budget rules. Any new programs must be paid for – with spending cuts in other areas, or revenue. When my party’s leaders later tried to rush a vote to waive fiscally responsible PAYGO budget rules, I was only one of nine Democrats to vote against them.
• Voted against a partisan coronavirus relief bill. When the COVID-19 pandemic was devastating our communities in 2020, it was time for both parties to focus on targeted relief that could actually become law and provide real help to those who were suffering. Unfortunately, my party’s leaders decided to push forward on a partisan bill with a wide scope that made it doomed in the Senate, only further delaying aid the Kansans desperately needed. That’s why I was only one of fourteen Democrats to vote against that bill.
• Worked with President Trump’s Administration, and Republicans and Democrats in Kansas and Missouri, to bring 700 new good-paying jobs to the Kansas City Metro region. We pushed the United States Department of Agriculture to bring key research facilities to our region. We live in the middle of the national biosciences corridor. Our area is naturally primed to take advantage of this opportunity. Some in my own party disagreed, but I fought to get this done because it was the right thing to do for Kansans.
It was an honor to join the Kansas congressional delegation and meet with Senator Robert Dole at the World War II memorial. Senator Dole made incredible contributions to our country and I was glad to have the opportunity to thank him for his service.
I know good ideas can come from Republicans and Democrats. Nearly 75 percent of the nearly 300 bills I’ve cosponsored are bipartisan.
We can move forward and build a better future together. That’s why as Vice Chair of the Infrastructure Committee, I worked with Republicans and Democrats to pass the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce says its fiscally responsible, and now we’re seeing the results. That includes modernizing U.S. 69 in Overland Park and replacing lead pipes in Olathe.
My focus is on concrete and bipartisan solutions that can make a difference for Kansans. For example, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law I helped pass is replacing lead pipes in Olathe. We need to invest our economy while we keep an eye out for waste and abuses.
And I worked with Republicans and Democrats as a key negotiator to finalize a major new economic law – the CHIPS and Science Act – so we can make more products and jobs here in the United States, not China.
I was honored to work alongside Kansas Senator Jerry Moran and others in the negotiations to help get this bipartisan law across the finish line. This law will help us secure our supply chains, lower costs, and create better paying jobs.
It’s time to keep moving forward and build on this hard-fought progress. The last thing anyone needs now is more extremism, division, and empty promises.
I was raised by a single mom and worked my way through college while juggling multiple jobs. I know what it means to struggle while Washington seems out of touch. I’m serving in the U.S. House of Representatives to bring a new generation of leadership to Washington.
